This comp was running a big three with a pig, deer and a fish. There were two sharks that got weighed in the biggest weighing 117 pounds. Their was a learning point for the organises and our judging team that when it came to weighing the fish they had to be gutted to make them all the same as some were gutted and some were not. I guess I drew the short straw as we could not expect each person to gut their fish.
I was surprised at how easy it is to gut a large fish, not like one of the deer that came in with its heart and lungs still in it. The venue was the local Waiau pub, which had just had new publicans taking it over. The publican was worried about people drinking in the car park as they did not have time to get a special licence yet I did not see one bottle of beer around the racks while we were weighing the animals. One of the main sponsors is Summer Weir, most pig hunters should have heard about her, she has a very good talent for painting and she has donated a lot of paintings to a number of competitions that I have been to, Wade Waller was lucky enough to win this painting of two dogs bailing a boar. This painting would look good in any house.
Jo and Andy Moriarty had a big part in organising and running the comp on the day as well as allowing four of our judging team to stay at their place for the night and to top that off Andy took us out for a quick hunt where we caught a 108 pound boar next morning.
