This was to be the first time that Temuka has had a pig hunting competition. It was run as a fund raiser for the Temuka fire brigade to help some of there members to go to the sky tower in Auckland for the Sky tower challenge where firemen and woman race to the top of the sky tower with all of their fire fighting equipment on. Richard Weir was one of the main organises and he had done a good job of sorting out sponsor ship.
Their fire station worked well as a venue as we had traffic flowing past the scrutineering table to off load there pigs and then move on. The racks for hanging the boars was positioned well in beside a concrete wall that worked well to keep the boars in the shade which kept them cool.
One hard luck story that turned out lucky for this particular hunter, Phil Bell was one of his boars that weighed 59kg had its nuts cut out by a mate he was hunting with without realising that they had to be intact.
This boar had a very nice jaw on it and would have been the best jaw at the competition which was a voucher for $700 worth of ATV tyres form Temuka motorcycle centre but rules are rules and they stated that the nuts had to be left in so we could not except this boar. Phil was all good about it as he realised that it was in the rules. Had Phil’s boar been excepted then his other 50 kg boar would not have won the average weight which was a voucher for an alloy dog box to the value of $1500 from Duncan engineering.
The competition was well supported by the locals as well as out of towners, some hunters traveled up to 3 hours to bring there pigs in to the weigh in. There were 20 boars weighed in total.
