The Taieri pig hunting club has been running for many years now and has a strong membership. On the 18th of August the were running their annual open pig hunting competition. The weather for the weekend was good for pig hunting but the conditions were not. During the recent winter the South Island had a very large dump of snow and this has caused a lot of trees to fall down so for the hunters going out in either forestry or native the going was tough. While hunters caught a few pigs the big boars seem to be very elusive.
While the weigh in was going on some of the club members had a BBQ going so every person could have a free feed. The boars and hunters did not start coming in until thirty minutes before the weigh in was to finish. So our Ridgeline judging team had a busy thirty minutes but managed well as there were only nineteen boars weighed in. Like the Oamaru comp the week before there just does not seem to be a lot of big boars getting around this year. Weather it is because of the snow our hunters killing to many pigs I don’t know but I hope the numbers start to pick up again by next year.
