Reece Nichol came up from Port Chalmers with 3 bitches, Faze a brindle 2 year old her 2 year old cousin Sky and a 7 month old named Bee.
We got onto the grey boar 1st and Faze was just to keen wanting to get in for the hold which got the boar to keep breaking. This was good for young Bee to get to see but she was more interested in walking around sniffing. This run ended with the dogs coming back buggered and wanting to sit in the creek to get their breath back.
Next bail we had both the black and white boar and the black boar bailed together until the dogs put a bit of pressure on them causing them to break. Fog was following the black and white boar so I called him back to put him back on the black boar because I knew he would make the dogs bail.
At this bail Reece tried a couple of different things to try and get Bee to join In. He started by patting Bee and trying to get her excited but this did not work So next he called Sky off the bail and gave her a pat while Bee came over to try and get another pat so Reece sent Sky back into the bail. While Reece did try hard Bee just did not want to join In. As she gets a bit older she will change.
Hi Bill…would you actually persist with dog ?
Your correct regards age but some dogs come to this more naturally than others as you know when a handful don’t make it at all.
My experience training specialist detector dogs would reinforce this however the dogs fail in that area in the main from drive issues ,distraction , and in some cases boring handlers.
Ive had several good and the odd very good pig dogs over 50 years and with persistence some have come right…others have become great pets for someone else.
Some are really just better as pets giving another potential candidate a chance…..good on you with your training…it’s great that it seems to be an equal opportunity with your facility for dogs and the pigs…well done.
