The Oamaru comp is run as a fund raiser for child cancer and is well supported by the local hunters. This year the comp was organised by Craig Gibb as the previous organiser Keith Hesselwood wanted a break from doing all the back ground work that goes with running any event. One thing that hunters should do when entering any comp is to read the rules for that hunt properly, one group of hunters turned up with three boars that all had their nuts out when it was clearly written on the rules boars must have nuts in. While they had a good number of entries the boars weighed in was a way down. Their were ninety entries and only thirteen boars weighed in. Talk amongst the hunters was that their just did not seem to be the numbers of big boars out on the hill at present. I don’t know whether this is through hunter pressure or due to the big dump of snow that we have had recently.
While Craig could not do anything about the numbers of boars coming he had done a very good job of getting a lot of sponsorship for this comp. By the end of prize giving every adult and junior that entered came away with a prize and there were still prizes left over for next years comp. I am hoping that the pig numbers are back up by then.
