Merry Xmas boar

It was the day before Christmas and I was taking the dogs out for a hunt. I had three dogs with me today, Tig, Rastus and Gus. I was leaving Bro behind today as he had a sore foot from in the training block the day before.

On this hunt I rode the bike for about five km before walking. As I walked up to the top of the hill Tig caught five possums and it was good to see how well Guys stayed back with me and Rastus rather than join in. Further up the hill Tig tracked off around a couple of gullies before going up and over the top. Luckily he did not catch up with a pig over there or it could have taken me the rest of the day to get it out.

I walked the dogs to the top of the hill then around a couple of gullies to where Tig had gone around earlier. As I was walking down through the Douglas firs a pig ran through below me. Rastus was behind me while Tig and Gus were out to my left. As I ran down to where the pig had gone through Rastus stepped up and at first tracked the wrong way when Gus turned up. I called them back and they took off after this pig. The pig made two hundred meters around to the edge of the Firs where the dogs put up a good bail. As I was closing in Tig arrived and held this boar. As I was getting close the boar threw Tig off and made a bolt for freedom down into the native gully. Getting into this bush was soaking wet as we had rain during the night and no drying. When I got in and stuck this boar I thought he might go 80 lbs. When I was gutting him I noticed that he had a good layer of fat on him as he was in good condition. Once I got him up onto my back I thought maybe he will go over 90 lbs.

Rolling the pig down through the open pines.

The first fifty meters through the native was step and thick so I could not help but get soaked through. Once out of the native I carried another hundred meters around the open pines before I could drag him five hundred meters down hill before the last two hundred meter carry. I left the boar at the bottom of the hill and walked a km back around to the bike. Back home I was surprised to see the scales go up to 108 lb.

After that good work out I’m sure I could indulge in a bit more food on Xmas day.
