Me getting up early on Christmas day to go for a pig hunt was not going to happen. It was a different story for my youngest son Bryce as he wanted to get out and catch himself a pig on Christmas day. He turned up home the night before wanting to grab a couple of dogs. I did not have any tracking gear at the moment so I said that he could take Fog who had just turned one year old on the 2nd of December along with my old dog Breeze. I would not take let him take either Lightning or Cloud out without wearing tracking collars as they go to far.
Bryce turned up at the forestry gate at 6.30 am ready to nail himself a pig. He had not been driving long with the two dogs on the back of the truck when they both got keen. As Bryce stopped the truck the two dogs took off, it was only a couple of minutes before Fog opened up with a good bail. The boar did not move once as Bryce snuck in on the bail. From 8 meters away he could see the pigs head as it was standing side on to him, through two branches of a tree, Breeze was out the front bailing and Fog was out the side behind the pig so Bryce had to wait until Fog moved out of the way before he shot it behind the ear. It was only a matter of dragging the boar 100 meters back to the truck and head away home so he was heading back out of the gate at 740 am. A quick hunt but a productive one as he was back in time for Christmas breakfast.
Best start to christmas aye Bryce, I pre ordered mine and went out the day before, bought home a nice eater, and made a spit out of drum to cook it for Christmas lunch. Beautiful. 🙂
