Lincoln hunting competition

The weigh in for this competition was on the 21 of July between 11am – 2pm and as usual the animals did not start arriving until 12.30pm.
This competition had been organised by the Lincoln young farmers group as a fundraiser for some of their studies during the year. I have now been involved with this comp for a number of years and one of the good points about this comp is that the people who do the organising change each year, as most of the Lincoln courses go for three years I get to see the first year students helping our judging team out on the day of the weigh in.  Then you have the main organisers who this year were Rachael Hoogenboom and Callum Woodhouse who had worked with me leading up to their competition and were doing most of the organising on the day the second year students and then you have the third year students who get to stand back and help out if needed.

telelift making the lifting a lot easier

Over the weekend we had a lot of rain which could have affected the access for some hunters and every hunter was going to get a wet arse for their efforts. They ended up with 97 adult and 15 junior entries.

We had the help of a telelift on the day which was sponsored by McCarthy contracting and driving by Michael who worked for McCarthy contracting. As the hunting wagons pulled up Michael could lift the animals up on the scales so we could get their weight and then just extend the boom out so the animal could be hung on the rack with no lifting at all, saving our backs. We ended up weighing in 18 boars and 10 stags.

Conner Oneill, Riley Miller and Harry Finch with the boar with the best tusks

Because the weather outside was not all that nice we had the prize giving inside. One of the big jobs at these hunting competitions is speaking on the microphone in front of a larger audience which is something that a lot of people don’t like to do so I was very surprised at how well Callum spoke in front of so many people. In life we meet people of all different back grounds and with so many different ideas and every now and then we see someone who you can tell has a big future ahead of them and I could tell that Callum is going to do very well in the game of life. There was a big cheer from the crowd when Matt Senior won the prize for the Average weight mouse.
Thank you Lincoln for allowing our Ridgeline judging team to once again be a part of your competition and looking forward to many more.
