Gus is now thirteen weeks old and is ready for some boundaries. When I go to put him into his kennel, he has learned that once he’s in the kennel, he can’t run around and play with the other dogs, so he stays away from me. When he does this, I call another dog up to me, which encourages Gus to want to join in, so it’s just a matter of picking him up and putting him into his kennel. When I do this, I always pat him and tell him how good he is so that he learns that his kennel is his safe place.
By putting a collar and rope on him he has no option but to do what I want. When I want to call him to me I first stand on the end of the rope so that he can not run away. When I call him in a nice tone of voice I also pull on the end of the rope at the same time so he has no option but to come to me then I give him a pat and tell him how good he is.
Every dog that I have done this with jumps around the first time but quickly become used to the collar and rope. As you can see Gus tries jumping around but quickly becomes accustomed to the rope. When I go up to the kennels this time instead of sneaking off Gus must know that with the rope he can’t get away so walks straight up to the kennels.
The rope is a great way to teach manners for all young dogs as long as you stay calm and happy with your dog.
