This has been one of those years where most of the hunting comps had been cancelled, While this comp was postponed once they did get a date form the 6th to the 8th of November pencilled in.
This comp is run at the Green Island Commercial tavern and this year the proceeds raised went to Camp Quality which is set up to help children suffering from cancer and each year they send 40 kids away for a week to Queenstown with this comp they were hoping to raise $12000 and the short fall was going to be kindly donated by John Cross who was here on the day of the weigh in helping to hand out some of the prizes. Over the weekend there had been a bit of rain in in the early morning of the comp yet once we started setting up the sun came out and we had a cracker day.
We had a digger there to help lift the animals that was donated by Clearwater civil and driving by Luke Ellis. Richie the publican was a great host and looked after our judging team well they had a free BBQ which went down well and a bouncy castle for the kids. Something that this comp does that no other comps do is they ask the hunters if they want to donate their animals to the charity that they are raising funds for and at the end of the weigh in we auction off a can of beer and they get the animal for free. I had never done an auction on a microphone before I first went to this comp but now it is one of the things that get the crowd involved and we had a great time doing it. Last year I remember a husband and wife bidding against each other on one animal and this year I have to mention Sam Turner not only did he weigh in the second heaviest boar but he donated it to the action and then won the action and brought his own boar back. Its acts like this that make me proud to be associated to the sport of pig hunting and proves there is some real good buggers out there.
