Grant traveled down from Christchurch with his nine month old bitch Brandy. To date she had only seen three pigs so was still very green to the sport of pig hunting. This was Grants only dog as he was fairly new to the sport of pig hunting. Right from the start I liked the look of this young bitch as she was very well mannered. When we rode the motor bike up to the pigs Brandy was keen to bark at the pigs with out needing any encouragement. On our first run she was quite stand offish. While she was barking she was not keen to get into close. For our second run I thought it would be better if I took two dogs Lightning and Breeze to get things worked up a bit more for Brandy. During this run Brandy was giving a lot of opportunity to build her confidence with the grey boar putting in a good effort. Any dog standing to close was going to be charged as he would try breaking until the dogs would pull him up again. Brandy slept well that night.
Next morning we went back into the block with Fog, Breeze and Brandy and gave the dogs a good run around on the main boar, at one stage I saw Breeze get thrown into the air and as she bounced off a pine tree the main boar grabbed her in his mouth and gave her a good shake. As soon as she was out of his mouth she was straight back in bailing as if nothing had happened.
For our last run I done a first, that was to take my new pup Thunder who is only fourteen weeks old into the block. On this run we caught the ginger boar again and Brandy had to step up so that Thunder did not show her up. During this run Brandy was getting as close as a foot from the boar while bailing.
Over the twenty four hours Brandy had gained a lot of confidence but she is still young so with a bit more work on pigs and a bit more age about her she should go all right on pigs.
Awesome to see little thunder putting in a massive effort. He’s going to be the most experienced pup on the block. Hasn’t quite got the thundering bark yet tho. 🙂
