This is going to be an endless job for me for quite some time yet. One temporary
fence that I have put up recently is just below the house as the bracken is growing very quickly and while it is still soft the sheep will eat it. Once bracken goes hard the sheep do not like to eat it. With this new fence the driveway can now be shut off so the sheep have only got a small area so they are more likely to clean the bracken out quickly so we can move them out again to save us having to open and close gates every time we want to enter or exit the property.
Another big fence that I have been working on is one of my boundary fences. When my wife and I first brought this property eight years ago I tried to walk around the boundary fence but could not get along this fence because the scrub was just to thick. So it has taken me many days of work to first clear the fence line then fix the fence. At one place while I was clearing the scrub away I found a strainer post laying on the ground with a stay on each side of it that had come out of the ground a long time back.
The reason for fixing this fence was because the stock would just walk through it where ever they wanted to. One day I went out to muster some of the sheep back and they just walked though the fence in many different places. Next day the sheep were back out again so I spent a lot of time on that two hundred meter section of fence. Next time I went and got these sheep back they came up against the fence that had been strained up so they walked down the fence towards the thicker scrub and walked through there.
So I knew that I had to clear the hole fence line and get the top wire electrified. One day after I had done a lot of the work on the fence Janice and I were sitting at the house having breakfast looking up the hill at the cows. Three of them had just walked over the fence as if it was not even there. The forth cow could see that the calves would not be able to get through the wires as I had tightened them up so she walked up to the fence put her head into it and just wrecked it the bi##h. This made me even more motivated to want to get this fence finished and electrified so I could get revenge on these cows.
Nice Christmas present, 1 post a day!
Thanks.
