I had a couple of hunts down south with Richard Hand and Tony Hogg. While down there Tony was talking about a new dog that he had just got off John Lockley. This dogs name was Boy and up until this point he had not been on pigs apart form the past two weeks with Tony. Tony had him out for three hunts and on his first hunt he did not do to much on the second hunt he went to the other dogs with a pig and on the third hunt he went out with the dogs on the find. So I was hoping to give young Boy some more work. When I took him into the small pig block he was quite happy running after the pigs with Fog until the pig stopped and turned back on them.
At one point I saw Mr Pig running down the fence line with Boy chasing but as soon as Boy got close Mr Pig turned to face him and he ran all the way back to me. Boy has thrown more to the greyhound breed so is very leggy and as he matures if he gets the passion to catch pigs he would easily be able to run them down. I did manage to get him out for a hunt with Fog and Thunder.
When they jumped off the bike I could tell that all tree dogs could smell a pig as they worked up an open face. Thunder and Boy wanted to work into the gut on the left while Fog went out two guts to the right and put up a nice bail. I heard as Thunder arrived and joined in with the barking. When Boy got there he gave a couple of quick barks then there was a wee scrape and both Boy and Thunder came back to me. I could not encourage them to get back in so I quietly snuck in to where Fog was bailing this boar who was very happy just standing his ground with one dog out front.
It was an easy shot from about seven meters and an easy carry three hundred meters back to the bike. Boy must have been hit by the boar in the front shoulder as he was still limping on it a couple of days later when I dropped him back off to Tony. Thunder normally stays on the wild pigs with Fog but he must have got a bit of a fright as well when Boy got hurt.
