I had Shane Thomas coming in to train two of his dogs. His older dog Max and seven month old Tikes. For our run in the block I took Rastus but he was being a pain in the arse wanting to ride Max so I took him out and came back with Bro.
Even though he is only 21 weeks old he is a natural bailer and loves barking at the pigs. We had the black boar bailed up and all three dogs were doing a great job. We had been on the pigs for over an hour when one of the dogs gave out a painful yelp. I quickly called the dogs in and noticed that Bro was bleeding very badly form his mouth. Checking his body over I could not find any rip marks so we got the dogs straight out of the block and took a closer look and discovered that Bro had been poked inside the top right hand side on his gum and the blood was flowing out so I had to calm him down. (All hunters should know that when you have a dog bleeding badly you need to calm your dog down and stop the bleeding before moving the dog or they can bleed to death.) Apart from the first couple of yelps he was still wanting to carry one with the pigs.
After a couple of minutes the bleeding stopped so I put him in his kennel to give him time to calm down. When Shane left I went up and let the dogs out and Bro jumped down and went to play with Rastus but the bleeding started again so I put them all away again for the next eight hours. Next time I let him out you would not have known that he had even been injured as he went and bailed the pigs through the fence at the house and then walked down the drive to help move the sheep.
When I feed him at night he was chewing on bones like normal which surprised me. I can see that he is going to grow into one very tough dog.
