My oldest son Sloan has recently started taking an interest in pig hunting and has been having some good success. A couple of weeks ago he was out hunting with his brother Bryce and mates Corey and Ram when they caught a 192 pound boar and this helped to get Sloan keen to get out and catch some more pigs. Two weeks ago Sloan was with me up Waiau way when we caught a 108 pound boar then the next week he was out with Bryce again and caught a 132 pound boar and a 70 pounder.
Then back out with me a couple of days later where we caught and released a 110 pound sow and took a 60 pound boar. Then two days later he was back up for another hunt. When we parked the bike I sent Fog away to go and find a pig. When he was on the next ridge about 150 meters away he stopped and looked back at me so I gave him the signal with my hand to keep going at which he went out to 300 meters and started bailing where we could see a nice black pig. The other two dogs that we had were Sloans dog Mack and my dog Thunder.
Thunder was next to arrive with Mack not to far behind. The boar did try and break but only made 20 meters down hill. As we were closing in on the action I heard Fog get ripped by the boar. This had Thunder dropping balls and coming back to me. Mack done well and stayed with Fog who never backs down. I managed to film the bail as Sloan moved in and shot the 131 pound boar. First pig for Sloan’s new 44 rifle. Sloan being the younger should be the fitter but I think he just wanted to see if his dad could still carry these bigger pigs out so I managed to get him up out of the gully for Sloan to carry it back around to the bike.
Well done boys
