Been a while since I have put up a post. Still doing a bit of dog training and getting out for a regular hunt.
I was planning on taking the dogs out for a hunt but only got as far as the road gate when I noticed Bro and Tig winding up my covernanted block so I gave them a bit of time. Rastus was happy to stay back with me while I watched progress on the GPS handpeice. The two dogs worked out around the front face where it is very step and thick with a lot of blackberry, as I watched and listened I could see how this boar was giving the dogs a good run around without leaving the area. After about 15 minutes a rode the bike around the corner and this must have spooked the boar back around the corner and up into the gully opposite my driveway. By the time I turned the bike around and headed up the drive a could hear a good bail going on. Once Rastus heard a bark he was quick to join in with his two mates in the tight native. As I closed in the boar must have tried to break so Tig and Bro grabbed an ear each, I was only meters away when he threw both dogs off and tried to break but Rastus had him pretty quickly. At this next bail I was closing in on hands and knees in the real tight stuff when this boar did not like me being too close and broke again across the creek closer to the 4wd track. I was thinking this was a far easier place to get him but as I got closer again it was thick as and while I was trying to find a way in once again he broke back to the spot he was previously bailed. This time I got to see him from about five meters away as I was laying on my stomach trying to crawl in closer. I could not get a shot from here as Tig sounded like he was bailing on the other side of the boar with Bro out front and Rastus also moving around. While I was trying to work out my next move he broke again with Tig and Bro holding him again for about 30 seconds before backing off and bailing this was enough to get him confused long enough for me to sneak in from above and shoot him. I did not even need to tie his legs up as I could drag him thirty meters up to the motorbike.
Back at the house in less than an hour from leaving my hunt was over. This boar weighed 112 pounds. With him hanging up I decided to get into some chores around home. Top of the list was some chainsaw work down below the house. I left the dogs off as I normally do when at home and when I turned the chainsaw off I heard one of my small Pigs squealing as if it was being attacked by the dogs. I was quick to shoot up to the house on the 4 wheeler and as I approached Fog was standing back and as soon as Rastus saw me he came off but it looked like Bro and Tig were trying to kill a young black and white pig in the dog kennel paddock. As I raised my voice to the dogs they let this wee pig go and as they stepped back this wee pig stood up like it had not even been biting and just walked away. I’m sure this pig will think twice before going into the dog kennel paddock in the future. I was pleased to see that the dogs know that I don’t like seeing them harming the Pigs and my training is paying off.
That night when I feed the Pigs this wee pig was there and did not look like it had any injuries.
